Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Acetaminophen Makers Concerning Autism Claims

Legal Case
Ken Paxton, a Trump ally seeking election to US Senate, alleged pharmaceutical manufacturers of concealing potential dangers of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing the manufacturers of Tylenol, claiming the companies withheld potential risks that the drug created to children's cognitive development.

The court filing follows thirty days after Donald Trump promoted an unproven link between taking Tylenol - alternatively called acetaminophen - during pregnancy and autism in offspring.

Paxton is suing J&J, which formerly manufactured the medication, the only pain reliever approved for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which presently makes it.

In a statement, he said they "deceived the public by gaining financially from suffering and promoting medication ignoring the potential hazards."

The company asserts there is lacking scientific proof tying acetaminophen to autism.

"These companies lied for decades, intentionally threatening countless individuals to line their pockets," Paxton, from the Republican party, stated.

The manufacturer said in a statement that it was "seriously troubled by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the safety of paracetamol and the likely effects that could have on the welfare of US mothers and children."

On its online platform, Kenvue also said it had "continuously evaluated the relevant science and there is insufficient valid information that shows a proven link between consuming acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Associations representing physicians and healthcare providers share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has said paracetamol - the primary component in acetaminophen - is a restricted selection for expectant mothers to treat pain and fever, which can pose significant medical dangers if left untreated.

"In multiple decades of investigation on the utilization of paracetamol in pregnancy, not a single reputable study has successfully concluded that the usage of acetaminophen in any period of pregnancy causes neurodevelopmental disorders in young ones," the group said.

This legal action references recent announcements from the Trump administration in asserting the drug is potentially dangerous.

In recent weeks, Trump caused concern from public health officials when he told pregnant women to "struggle intensely" not to use acetaminophen when ill.

The FDA then published an announcement that doctors should consider limiting the consumption of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a proven link" between the drug and autism in young ones has not been established.

The Health Department head Robert F Kennedy Jr, who oversees the Food and Drug Administration, had promised in spring to undertake "extensive scientific investigation" that would establish the cause of autism spectrum disorder in a short period.

But experts warned that finding a unique factor of autism spectrum disorder - considered by experts to be the outcome of a complex mix of genetic and surrounding conditions - would prove challenging.

Autism is a type of enduring cognitive variation and disability that influences how persons encounter and engage with the environment, and is recognized using doctors' observations.

In his legal document, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is campaigning for the Senate - asserts the manufacturer and J&J "deliberately disregarded and attempted to silence the evidence" around paracetamol and autism.

The case aims to force the firms "remove any promotional materials" that asserts acetaminophen is reliable for expectant mothers.

This legal action echoes the concerns of a group of parents of children with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who sued the manufacturers of acetaminophen in recently.

Judicial authorities rejected the case, declaring investigations from the family's specialists was inconclusive.
