Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public.
He stated in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, excited about the promise of the organization, and look forward following their progress".
The former Harvard president, who once headed the Ivy League institution, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed emails showed that Summers exchanged messages with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 detention for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the technology organization stated it accepted Summers' determination to step down.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," the organization commented.
Congressional Action
This development follows after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on recently to pass a bill that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its files on the case.
The measure will subsequently move to the office of US President Donald Trump for signature. He has indicated he expects to sign the bill, after reversing his stance on the matter following pressure from his base.
Email Contents
A collection of Epstein-connected messages made public by the Congressional committee days ago referenced multiple prominent individuals in the financier's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those people.
The messages revealed that the economist and the financier dined together frequently, with he often attempting to introduce the academic to prominent international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were shared with the wider community, he expressed he took "complete accountability for my misguided judgment to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to reestablish faith and mend bonds with the persons closest to me".
Professional History
Summers occupied senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He led the institution from the early 2000s and remains a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments recently on this week, he indicated he would persist with his educational duties.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that Summers was not associated with the organization.
The former official became part of the leadership of the AI company, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
