El Kaabi's Breathtaking Goal Wraps Up The Atlas Lions' Victory Against the Coelacanths in Africa Cup of Nations Opening Match.

The Morocco shook off a jittery start to defeat their island opponents in the tournament's inaugural fixture on Sunday, after strikes by Brahim Díaz and super-sub El Kaabi in the second half.

It was a less than dominant showing, however, from the heavily tipped hosts, who sit 97 places higher than the tiny island nation in the FIFA rankings and were forced to work tirelessly for the victory in wet conditions at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.

Tense Beginning and Missed Chances

The hosts failed to convert an first-half penalty and were goalless at half-time even with dominating possession, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.

It came when full-back Mazraoui showed great skill to keep the ball in play before laying it square for Brahim Díaz to sidefoot into the net.

Every first match is always difficult but we delivered in the second half,” said Morocco coach Walid Regragui.

El Kaabi's Moment of Magic

Any lingering nerves was subsequently extinguished by a piece of sheer genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only 10 minutes after his introduction, the forward met a cross with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, doubling and ensuring the result.

Before that, the Moroccan team could have been the lead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was awarded for a foul on Díaz. However, Soufiane Rahimi penalty was kept out by Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor.

Comoros Defiant Stand and Late Chance

The underdogs comfortably held Morocco at bay before the Moroccans' superior firepower eventually told.

Shot-stopper Pandor made several further fine saves to limit the scoreline as the game progressed, although Comoros created a clear opportunity for an equalizer shortly after the first goal, with Rafiki Saïd firing straight at keeper Bounou.

Fitness Concern for Hosts

The victory was partially overshadowed by an injury to the captain, Romain Saïss, who limped off in the 18th minute in tears.

This centre-back had only returned to the international setup recently following a lengthy absence caused by a serious ankle operation.

The win continues the team's historic run of consecutive wins to nineteen, beating the old best of 15 set by the Spanish national team between 2008 and 2009.
